| Simon was instructed in hedgerow skills
and other survival techniques from an early age by his father. Simon went on to train at the Breakaway Survival School and
became an instructor. He was able to practice his skills when The
Daily Mail needed an expert to go to the Maldives to teach a young
female reporter how to live alone on an island. The story of the
"Castaway" including Simon's part, was serialised in the
newspaper in 2001.
