I
have always tried to draw upon knowledge that is inherent to this land.
Old crafts and lore, which were once common to all. Now sadly, these
ways are disappearing, along with those who held these old skills.
The
greatest influence in my life was my father, an ex Royal Marine who
taught me to respect our countryside. At a very early age he started
showing me basic field-craft techniques. These proved very useful to me,
as later in life I would seek to build upon these skills and try to find
out more and more. I have tried to learn how to live off the land, not
just to survive, but to live in every respect.
One
of the best teachers that I have had the privilege of meeting is Mick
Tyler. Former SAS trooper and military instructor, Mick has taught
literally thousands of people over the years. Last year alone, 800
people passed through his school.
Some
of the people that have attended Mick’s courses have gone
on to become instructors themselves. I have had many opportunities to
learn from him and his way of living and because of this I was able to
be of some assistance to the Daily Mail in the Maldives Islands as an
advisor. And so it is that I now find myself seeking more of the old
ways from those in the know.
