Sussex Scrapbook ~ Nature walks in Sussex throughout the year
Green Man
Monday 29th June 2009
Buchan Park Crawley

Just a little stroll, at dusk, at our local (and closest) nature reserve. We wanted to take another look for the Nightjar we saw there last week. We also wanted to know if it was alone or with others. We only heard churring coming from one place last time so we couldn't be sure if there were others about. Although it was quite dark, when the bird flew past us, I thought I saw some white markings: that would make it a male.
Anyway, on the way up to where we were going to watch from, we spotted a Slow Worm on the path ahead of us. Sadly, it saw us just as we saw it, and so it slowly slinked away into the hedgerow.
We managed to get a couple of views of the nightjar and as I saw one flying towards where another was churring, there must be at least two of them.
