Sussex Scrapbook ~ Nature walks throughout the year
Green Man
Sunday 28th December 2008
Kithurst Hill - Chantry Hill - Patching Hill - Wepham Down - The Burgh - Springhead Hill - Kithurst Hill
10 miles

This walk is not nearly as hilly as it may seem. The car park at Kithurst is right on the top of the Downs and from there you only take small undulations around Harrow Hill and the circumference of the Angmering Estate. An easy walk with stunning views and the chance of seeing many species of bird. The highlight for us today was seeing a Merlin trying to catch a Starling but we also saw Kestrels, Buzzards, Grey Partridge, Fieldfares and Lapwings.
The real adrenaline rush of the day was on the journey there by bike, when black ice caused us to lose control of both wheels. We were resigned to hitting the tarmac hard in a shower of slushy water and bike parts, when the tyres mercifully gripped on something firm and took us back on the straight and narrow. Phew!

Ice was the theme for today

Looking back towards Kithurst as we warm up by fast marching to Chantry Hill

We headed off from the SDW towards Longfurlong at Chantry. Great views along there.

We had to hit the main road for a short section

The Burgh in the distance. Gill told me that the shadows spelt out Happy Christmas!
I think I need new glasses.
