Wildlife walks throughout the year

Buchan Park
A bit of a contrast to yesterday as it was raining all day today. Even so, by
about 2pm we felt the need to get out of the house, so we popped over to Buchan
Park. We always manage to see a woodpecker there and we were not disappointed
this time. A Great spotted Woodpecker clambering up a tree. Other sightings
were, Goldcrest, Blackcap, Long-tailed Tits, Nuthatch and Great crested Grebes
doing their mating dance on the lake. We also saw a grebe eating a fish that was
not much smaller than itself. We just couldn't believe that it would be able to
swallow it. It had the tail sticking out of its beak for about 10 minutes.
The park is looking really
good as everything is bursting into growth. The heathland parts are actually
starting to be taken over by trees again, a process that will happen if the
heath is not managed correctly. I don't know what they are going to do about it
but I hope they do something. The heath is used by nightjars and we wouldn't
like to see them leave the area.
