Chanctonbury Ring
The bike is all sorted out and working perfectly again so all is well with the
world. We had a good lie in today, and so when we got out we headed straight for
Chanctonbury Ring on the South Downs near Washington. This place is/was a large
copse of trees on a promontory of the Downs. Unfortunately the big storm of '87 wiped
a lot of the trees out. It has been replanted but the trees are still very
young. This takes nothing away from the place as it is a very beautiful spot
with fantastic panoramic views.

The path up is a bit steep.

Near the top is a dewpond in a site of special scientific
interest (SSSI).
The dewpond was first constructed in 1870 and was restored in
1970 by the Society of Sussex Downsmen.

This is Chanctonbury Ring in its present sorry state.

The magical quality of the place has not been affected though
